Lucas de Groot
Personal details
From: Netherlands
Born: Noordwijkerhout, Netherlands, 1963
What he does: Type Design, Logo Design, Newspaper/Magazine Design, Low Resolution Type Design, Parametric Fonts
Between 1982 and 1987 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague under Gerrit Noordzij. Between 1989 and 1993 he worked on corporate identity projects at the Dutch design group BRS Premsela Vonk.
In 1993 he joined MetaDesign in Berlin where he worked with Erik Spiekermann on the development of the FF Meta family. He is now typographic director at MetaDesign, working on corporate design projects including logo design, magazine concepts, and custom typefaces. He also regularly lectures on type design.
De Groot founded his own type foundry, LucasFonts, in 2000.
Its aim, in a few words: to make the world a better place by designing typefaces that look good and work well under any circumstances and in many languages. Graphic designers across the planet have discovered the special qualities of Luc(as)’ fonts. They are attracted by their functionality and friendly appearance and love the enormous range of possibilities that each family offers. Many also appreciate the idiosyncrasies – a quest for extremes that has resulted in some of the narrowest, thinnest, wittiest or boldest typefaces around.

Hand-lettered book cover designs, 1988–1991
In 1987–88 Luc(as) spent his practical year freelancing for Studio Tint in The Hague, among other clients. From 1989 onwards, he worked at BRS Premsela Vonk in Amsterdam. At both studios he designed several book covers with hand-drawn alphabets that were reproduced photographically.
Hand-drawn alphabets, 1983–1987
Type design was part and parcel of the KABK’s graphic design curriculum. Among Luc(as)’ hand-drawn alphabets were Narsdesis, a semi-serif that was one of the examples for TheMix, and Lucas Met Haakjes (“Lucas with brackets”), an set of letters in eleven weights made for a lightbox. A seven-weight family was designed for a calender that used a different weight for each day of the week.

Calibri
Calibri is a humanist sans-serif typeface family under the Microsoft ClearType Font Collection.
In Microsoft Office 2007, it replaced Times New Roman as the default typeface in Word[1] and replaced Arial as the default in PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook. It will continue to be the default typeface in Microsoft Office 2010 applications.[citation needed]
Calibri was designed by Lucas de Groot for Microsoft to take advantage of Microsoft's ClearType rendering technology.
Characteristics
The font features subtle rounded stems and corners that are visible at larger sizes. The typeface includes characters from Latin, Latin extended, Greek, and Cyrillic scripts. OpenType features include small caps, subscripts and superscripts, and extra ligatures.
As with other sans serif ClearType Collection fonts, it includes unique italic type features, which are common in modern typefaces.
Availability
The typeface is distributed with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2007, and Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.
This typeface, along with Cambria, Candara, Consolas, Constantia, and Corbel, is also distributed with the free Powerpoint 2007 Viewer,[2] the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack,[3] and the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac.[4]
The retail version of the typeface is sold by Ascender Corporation, as well as by Monotype Imaging in MicroType format as part of the Vista 8 Font Set package.
